Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How does Wi-Fi work?

The Big Idea

Wi-Fi lets phones, tablets, and computers reach the internet, without any wires. It sends information through the air, using invisible radio waves. Let's follow the waves!

Radio Waves

Step one: a box sends invisible radio waves. That box is called a router. It's connected to the internet by a cable. It sends out radio waves in every direction, like ripples spreading across a pond.

Catch the Waves

Step two: your device catches the waves. Inside your tablet or phone is a tiny antenna that picks up the radio waves. It sends waves back to the router too, so information flows both ways!

On-Off Codes

Step three: the waves carry tiny on-off codes that become pictures and words. Every picture, word, and video is turned into a code of ones and zeros. Your device reads millions of them every second, and puts the picture back together!

A Closer Look

Let's follow the whole Wi-Fi trip! The router gets the internet through a cable in the wall. It turns the information into radio waves, and sends them out in every direction. Your device catches the waves, and sends its own waves back. It's a two-way chat!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Wi-Fi is radio, not a little internet string! Wi-Fi waves zoom at the speed of light, about three hundred thousand kilometres every second! Walls, water, and metal can make Wi-Fi waves weaker. Radios, TVs, and phones use radio waves too.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Open a web page or video close to the Wi-Fi box. Then walk farther away, maybe into another room. Notice: does the page load slower? Do the signal bars drop? Distance and walls make the waves weaker!

Outro

So Wi-Fi is really radio: invisible waves carrying codes of ones and zeros, right through the air! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
