Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does soap clean things?

The Big Idea

Why can't water alone wash away greasy, oily messes? Because oil and water don't mix! Soap is the helper that grabs onto both of them. Let's see how it works, step by step!

Water Alone Slides Off Grease

Step one: water alone slides off grease. Oil and water don't mix. So when you rinse a greasy plate with just water, the water rolls right over the grease. The mess just stays stuck!

Soap Loves Water AND Grease

Step two: soap has one end that loves water, and one that loves grease. Each tiny soap molecule has a water-loving head, and a long, grease-loving tail. It's like a tiny tadpole that can hold hands with both!

Soap Gives Water a Handle

Step three: soap gives water a handle, so dirt rinses away. The grease-loving tails dig into the oil, and the heads stick out toward the water. Now water can grab those heads and wash the whole greasy bundle right down the drain!

Soap Molecule Up Close

Let's look closer! Lots of soap molecules team up around a blob of oil. The grease-loving tails tuck inward, around the oil. And the water-loving heads face outward, toward the water, like a tiny spiky ball!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! One drop of soap can surround millions of tiny grease droplets! Soap also helps wash away germs, so scrub your hands for twenty seconds. That's about as long as singing Happy Birthday twice! And people have been making soap for more than 4,000 years!

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Ask a grown-up for two oily plates. Rinse one with water only. Rinse the other with water, plus one drop of soap. Which plate gets cleaner? Rub your finger on each one to feel the difference. That's soap at work!

Outro

Soap cleans because one end grabs grease and the other end grabs water, so dirt rinses away. Scrub-a-dub-dub! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
