Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do eclipses happen?
The Big Idea
An eclipse happens when a shadow in space blocks sunlight! Sometimes the Moon blocks the Sun. And sometimes Earth blocks the Sun from reaching the Moon. Let's explore how shadows in space create amazing events!
The Moon Can Block the Sun
Number one: the Moon can block the Sun. During a solar eclipse, the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun. The Moon's shadow falls on Earth, and the daytime sky can get dark!
Earth Can Block the Sun on the Moon
Number two: Earth can block the Sun from the Moon. During a lunar eclipse, Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon. Earth's shadow falls on the Moon, and the Moon slowly darkens.
Shadows Must Line Up Just Right
Number three: the shadows must line up just right. Eclipses don't happen every month, because the Moon's path is a little bit tilted. Most months, the Moon passes just above or below. For an eclipse, the Sun, Moon, and Earth must line up perfectly!
Solar vs. Lunar
Let's compare the two kinds! A solar eclipse: the Moon blocks the Sun. You see it in the daytime. People in the Moon's darkest shadow see a total solar eclipse! A lunar eclipse: Earth blocks the Sun on the Moon. You see it at night. The Moon darkens, and may even turn red!
Quick Facts
Quick facts! A total solar eclipse is rare in any one town. The Moon's shadow is small, so you might have to travel to see one! During a lunar eclipse, the Moon can glow red, lit by all of Earth's sunrises and sunsets. Lunar eclipses are safe to watch with just your eyes. And the dark part of a total solar eclipse lasts only a few minutes!
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Hold a small coin in front of a lamp. What happens to the light behind it? The coin blocks the light and makes a shadow, just like the Moon or Earth can block the Sun! Move the coin closer, then farther away. How does the shadow change? And remember: never stare at the Sun! Use safe solar eclipse glasses, or watch with an adult.
