Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do volcanoes erupt?

The Big Idea

A volcano is an opening in Earth's surface where melted rock, gas, and ash can escape. Let's discover why volcanoes erupt, in three steps!

Melted Rock

Step one: melted rock underground. Deep underground, it's super hot! Some rocks melt, and become magma. Magma is lighter than the solid rock around it, so it slowly rises and collects in a magma chamber.

Gas Pressure

Step two: gas builds pressure. Gases in the magma form bubbles. The bubbles squeeze together and build pressure, Like a shaken bottle of soda!

Weak Spot

Step three: magma finds a weak spot. When the pressure gets too high, magma pushes through a crack or weak spot, and erupts!

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look inside a volcano! At the top, the crater lets out lava, gas, and ash. The magma conduit is the pathway to the surface. The magma chamber holds melted rock. In real volcanoes, it's usually kilometers deep underground! And layers of old lava and ash build up the volcano's cone.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Lava is magma after it reaches the air. Once above ground, magma is called lava! Lava can be hotter than one thousand degrees Celsius! Many volcanoes are hidden underwater, on the ocean floor. And the biggest volcano in our solar system, Olympus Mons, is on Mars!

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Shake a bottle of soda with the cap on. Then imagine opening it outdoors, with a grown-up. The gas bubbles rush out and push the soda with them, just like gas pushes magma! Never shake soda at people. Science is fun and safe!

Outro

Volcanoes erupt when gassy magma builds up pressure and finds a way out! Be curious, ask questions, and explore! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
