Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do ants follow a trail?
The Big Idea
Have you ever seen ants marching in a long line? They're following an invisible trail! Ants talk with smells, using special chemicals called pheromones.
Finder Lays a Scent
Step one: the finder lays a scent. When an ant finds food, she carries some home, leaving a scent trail behind her. It's like saying, I found food! Time to tell my sisters! Worker ants really are all sisters.
Sisters Follow
Step two: the sisters follow the pheromones. Her sisters smell the trail with their antennae, and follow it. This way! Each ant that finds food adds more scent on the way back, so the trail gets stronger and stronger.
Trail Fades
Step three: the trail fades when the food is gone. When the food runs out, the ants stop adding scent, and the old scent slowly fades away. No more food, no more scent. The trail disappears!
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at the trail! Each ant uses its antennae to smell the way. The scent dots show the pheromones, like invisible arrows on the ground. And they all lead to the food!
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Some ant trails can be a hundred meters long. That's like following a scent trail across a soccer field! Ants smell with their antennae, not a nose. Ants also use a different smell to warn their sisters about danger! And many ants can carry things much heavier than their own bodies.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Find an ant trail outdoors. Gently lay a leaf across the trail. But do not crush any ants! Watch what happens. Do the ants get confused? How do they find their way again?
