Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do penguins huddle?

The Big Idea

Emperor penguins raise their chicks in Antarctica, the coldest place on Earth. In winter, icy winds howl, and it can get colder than minus forty degrees! So penguins use teamwork to stay warm. They huddle together!

Wind Steals Heat

Step one: wind steals heat. When cold wind blows over a penguin, it sweeps away the warm air next to its body. Brrr! A penguin standing all alone loses heat fast.

Outer Ring

Step two: the outer ring takes the blast. The birds on the outside of the huddle block the wind for the whole group. In the middle, penguins share each other's body heat, like a big feathery blanket!

Taking Turns

Step three: the birds rotate, so everyone takes a turn. The huddle slowly shuffles. Chilly penguins on the edge work their way inside, and warm ones move out. That way, no penguin stays in the cold too long!

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a huddle! Icy wind blows against the outside. The outer ring takes the blast. Penguins in the middle stay cozy and warm. And the whole huddle keeps slowly moving. A tight circle, a smart plan, a warm survival strategy!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Inside a huddle, it can be tens of degrees warmer than outside! Sometimes it gets so toasty that penguins step out to cool off. Emperor penguin dads huddle all winter, keeping an egg warm on their feet. And one huddle can hold thousands of penguins!

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Be a penguin family. First, stand alone in front of a fan. Feel the wind, and notice the cold. Next, stand beside your family. Notice the warmth, and share the heat! But don't squeeze! Be gentle, and give everyone space. Which felt warmer? Why do you think so?

Penguins show us that teamwork keeps everyone warm. Science in action, together! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
