Why Do Dogs Tilt Their Heads? Clues From a Curious Pup!

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do dogs tilt their heads?

The Big Idea

Aww! When you talk to a dog, it sometimes tilts its head. So cute! Scientists are still figuring out exactly why, but they have some great ideas. Let's explore the top three!

Muzzle Blocks

Idea one: the muzzle can block the view! A dog's muzzle is its snout, its nose and mouth. A long muzzle can get in the way of what's right in front of it, Like your mouth, when you're talking!

Tilt Clears

Idea two: a tilt clears the face! When a dog tilts its head, the muzzle moves out of the way, And that opens up a clearer view. Now it can watch your face as you talk!

Ears Catch Sound

Idea three: ears catch sound better! Tilting moves a dog's ears to a new position. That clever tilt may help those ears scoop up sounds, And figure out exactly where a sound is coming from.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a dog's face. Here are the eyes, looking forward. Below them is the long muzzle. It can block part of the view. And here are the floppy ears, which can shift with a tilt. One tilt: a clearer view, and better hearing!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Dogs with long muzzles, like collies, greyhounds, and shepherds, may tilt more often. Dogs can hear much higher sounds than people can! They have around 18 muscles to move their ears. And some clever dogs tilt when they hear their favorite toys' names!

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a friendly dog, say a new word, or make a funny sound. Watch the dog's ears and head. What do you notice? Does it tilt more for some words than others? Curious minds ask questions. Great observations find the answers!

Outro

So a dog's head tilt may help it see your face, and hear you better. It's paying attention to you! Remember, Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
