Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do we get dizzy when we spin?

The Big Idea

Wheee! Spinning is fun, until the room keeps spinning! That wobbly, dizzy feeling all happens inside your amazing inner ear. Let's spin into some science, in three steps!

Fluid Loops

Step one: meet your inner ear's fluid loops! Deep inside your ear are tiny loops, filled with fluid. They're called semicircular canals. They sense balance, and the whole set is about as wide as a pea!

Spin Sloshes

Step two: spinning sloshes the fluid! When you spin, the fluid in the canals starts to move, and swirl in the same direction. Tiny hairs inside feel the swirl, and tell your brain: we're spinning!

Fluid Keeps Moving

Step three: you stop, but the fluid keeps moving! Like juice still swirling in a cup after you stop stirring, The fluid keeps sloshing for a little while. Your brain thinks you're still spinning, but your eyes say you've stopped. That mix-up makes the room spin!

A Closer Look

Let's look inside the semicircular canals. There are three loops, each pointing a different way. One senses nodding yes, one shaking no, and one tipping your head side to side. When the fluid moves, tiny hairs inside bend, and send signals to your brain. That's how your brain knows when your head is turning!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! You have three semicircular canals in each ear. That's six in all! They work together to help you balance, and stay steady. Dancers spot, fixing their eyes on one point, to feel less dizzy. Your eyes help you balance too!

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! In an open, safe space, spin around twice, slowly, then stop. What do you notice about the room? Have a grown-up nearby, and sit down if you feel wobbly. Write or draw what happens!

Outro

So you get dizzy because the fluid in your inner ear keeps swirling, even after you stop! Remember, Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
