Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do we get bruises?

The Big Idea

Bonk! You bumped your arm, and a few days later, there's a colorful mark. That's a bruise! It's a sign of your body's amazing repair crew at work. Let's see how it happens!

Bump

Step one: bump! When you bump into something hard, It can break tiny blood vessels under your skin, called capillaries. They're thinner than a hair!

Blood Leaks

Step two: blood leaks! A little blood leaks out of the broken vessels, into the nearby tissue. It gets trapped under your skin, and that's what makes the mark! Sometimes there's swelling too, because your body sends extra fluid to help.

Body Recycles It

Step three: your body recycles it! Cleanup cells break down the trapped blood, bit by bit. As they work, the bruise changes color, from purple, to green, to yellow. Then the bruise fades away!

A Closer Look

Bruises come in stages. Not ouch forever! At first, a fresh bruise looks red, blue or purple. After about 5 days, it can turn green, as your body breaks the blood down. Then it turns yellow or brown. It's almost gone! Most bruises disappear in about 2 weeks. Everyone heals a little differently.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Ice can help swelling feel better. Ask a grown-up to wrap ice in a cloth, and hold it on for 10 to 15 minutes. Kids get lots of bruises on their knees and shins, from running and playing. Bruises are your body's repair crew in action!

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! If you get a bruise, and a grown-up says it's okay, watch it change. Observe its color. Check it each day, at the same time. What do you notice? Draw the colors in order!

Outro

So a bruise is just your body's repair crew, cleaning up after a bump! Remember, Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
