Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do we yawn?

The Big Idea

Ahhh... Did you just yawn? Maybe you will soon! Everybody yawns, even babies before they're born. Let's explore the science behind a big yawn, in three steps!

Brain Wants Alertness

Step one: your brain wants more alertness! When your brain senses it's time to focus, or your energy is dipping, It looks for a quick reset. A yawn can help wake up your mind!

Big Breath

Step two: a big breath of air! You take a deep breath in, through your wide-open mouth. Scientists once thought yawns were mainly for getting more oxygen, but experiments showed that's not the main reason. Many now think that big gulp of cool air may help cool your brain, and refresh it. Hello, fresh air!

Stretch

Step three: stretch your face and chest! Your jaw, throat and chest stretch wide open. This gets your blood flowing, and helps you feel more awake. Stretch, reset, feel alert!

A Closer Look

Let's see a yawn in action! First, a tired moment. Then, a big yawn! A deep breath in... And now, more alert! A yawn is your body's clever way of pressing refresh.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Yawns can be contagious! Seeing, hearing, or even thinking about a yawn can trigger one in your own brain. Your brain is wired to connect with other people! Dogs can even catch yawns from their humans! A yawn usually lasts about 6 seconds.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Next time someone yawns, notice what your body does. Do you yawn too? Try reading about yawns. Did it make you yawn? I bet it did! Record it, and look for patterns!
