Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do we have baby teeth?
The Big Idea
Baby teeth are like a starter set. They help us now, and they make way for our grown-up smile later! Let's explore their story in three steps.
Our Starter Set
Step one: our starter set! We're born without any teeth showing, but tiny tooth buds are already hiding in our gums. Baby teeth start coming in around 6 months old, And most kids end up with 20 baby teeth in all!
A Helpful Set
Step two: a helpful starter set! Baby teeth help us chew our food, and speak clearly. They also save space for our adult teeth, and help our jaws grow. They're important for eating, smiling and growing!
Time to Make Room
Step three: time to make room! Around age 6 or 7, adult teeth start to push up from underneath. The baby tooth's roots dissolve, so it gets wobbly, and falls out. Then the adult tooth takes its place!
A Closer Look
So, what's happening under the gums? A baby tooth has a smaller root. It holds the space for the adult tooth. The adult tooth is bigger and stronger. It grows underneath, and moves into place.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Most kids have about 20 baby teeth. Most adults have about 32 permanent teeth! Your front teeth are usually the first ones to get wobbly. Tooth enamel is the hardest stuff in your whole body! So brush every day to keep it strong.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Count in a mirror! Look at your teeth in a mirror. Count your baby teeth, or ask a grown-up to help. Notice their shapes. Some are flat for biting, and some are bumpy for chewing. What do you see?
