Book 9, Question 145
Why Check for Food Recalls?
We check for food recalls because sometimes problems are found after food is already packed and sold! A recall notice tells families which products to stop using. It is a public safety megaphone, and it helps everyone stay safe together.
More fun facts
- More recalls do not mean food is less safe. They often reflect better testing, tracking and monitoring.
- Some recalls are just to be careful, but sometimes people really did get sick.
- Germs like E. coli, listeria and salmonella can cause recalls. Listeria has been found in frozen waffles and packaged deli meats.
- The UK's Food Standards Agency posts an up to date list of food recall alerts.
- Delays in sending out recall news can keep people from finding out quickly.
