Book 7, Question 7
Why Does Dew Sparkle on Grass?
Dew is made of tiny beads of water that appear on grass overnight. At night the grass cools down, and invisible water vapor in the air touches it and turns into liquid droplets. Those droplets sparkle when the morning sun shines on them!
More fun facts
- Dew is water vapor from the air that has turned back into liquid on a surface, like grass or a car windshield.
- The temperature at which water vapor turns into liquid is called the dew point.
- If a surface is cold enough, the water vapor turns into frost instead of dew.
- On clear nights, the ground loses heat to space, which cools the air right above it.
- Plants give off water vapor into the air, which can help clouds form.
Questions kids ask
Is dew the same as rain?
No. Dew forms right on surfaces when water vapor in the air turns into liquid.
What is the difference between dew and frost?
If the surface is cold enough, the water vapor turns into ice crystals called frost instead of dew.
