How can a heavy elephant walk so quietly?
An elephant weighs several tons, but it can walk almost silently.
Under each foot is a thick cushion of fat and stretchy tissue. When the foot touches the ground, the cushion squishes out and spreads the weight. When the foot lifts, the cushion shrinks. This soft padding keeps its steps quiet and its feet from sinking too deep.
