Book 33, Question 81
What is the difference between odd-toed and even-toed hoofed mammals?
Hoofed mammals come in two types.
Horses, rhinos, and tapirs have an odd number of toes, with the middle toe carrying most of the weight. Cows, deer, pigs, giraffes, and hippos have an even number of toes, usually two or four. Scientists use toe counts to sort these animals into groups. A toe count is a clue to a family tree.
