Book 32, Question 102
Why can some tortoises live longer than people?
Giant tortoises live slow lives.
They move slowly, burn energy slowly, and grow slowly, and their sturdy shells protect them. A Seychelles giant tortoise named Jonathan, living on the island of Saint Helena, was hatched around 1832 and is thought to be the oldest known land animal. Slow living may be part of the secret to a very long life.
