Book 32, Question 87
Why do hatchlings carry a built-in lunchbox?
Before a baby reptile hatches, it has a yolk sac attached to its belly.
The yolk is a store of food. After hatching, the baby absorbs the leftover yolk into its body, and this feeds it for days. That gives the hatchling time to find its first meal. A yolk-sac lunchbox is a clever way to start life.
