Book 32, Question 42

How does a leatherback turtle stay warm in cold seas?

Leatherbacks swim in chilly water far from the tropics.

They are huge, and a big body loses heat slowly. They also have a thick layer of oily fat and special blood vessels in their flippers that help keep heat inside. Their muscles make warmth as they swim. Together these tricks let them keep their bodies warmer than the water around them.
