How can you feed backyard birds safely?
Use clean feeders and the right food.
Black oil sunflower seeds are popular with many birds. Do not use bread, which has little nutrition. Wash feeders every couple of weeks with hot, soapy water to stop germs from spreading, and place them near cover but away from windows. Hummingbird food is four parts water to one part plain sugar, with no dyes. Always wash your hands afterward.
