Book 31, Question 73

Why won’t most eggs from the store hatch?

A chick can only start growing inside an egg if the egg was fertilized before the shell formed.

Hens on farms that make eggs for eating usually live without roosters, so their eggs cannot grow chicks. Even a fertilized egg must be kept warm for about three weeks to hatch. A cold egg in the refrigerator can never become a chick.
