Book 31, Question 34

Why do shorebirds have beaks of different lengths?

On a muddy beach, food hides at different depths.

A bird with a long, curved bill can probe deep for worms. A bird with a short bill picks tiny snails near the surface. Because each kind digs to its own depth, many species can share the same beach without fighting. When the tide goes out, you might see a whole row of birds feeding at different spots.
