Book 31, Question 30
Why do finches have short, thick beaks?
A finch eats seeds, and many seeds have hard shells.
A short, thick beak is like a strong nutcracker. It can bite hard with a lot of force, crack the shell, and drop the empty husk. Birds with thinner beaks cannot crack big seeds, but they may be better at picking insects. Different beak shapes let many kinds of birds share one place without fighting over food.
