Book 30, Question 124

What happens to fish when water from a factory is much warmer than the lake?

Warm water holds less oxygen than cold water.

When factories, power plants, or paved areas send heated water into a lake, fish that need cold water can have trouble breathing. Warmth can also encourage more algae growth. Careful planning, like cooling water before it's released and shading streams with trees, helps protect lakes.
