Book 30, Question 108

What do lake scientists measure besides the color of the water?

Lake scientists take temperature at several depths, since lakes form layers.

They measure dissolved oxygen, which fish need, and chlorophyll, which shows how much algae is growing. They also test for nutrients like phosphorus and for germs such as E. coli where people swim. Some tests use color-changing strips, while others use sensors and labs. The numbers tell whether a lake is healthy.
