Book 30, Question 46

Why is a lake often clearest in late spring?

In spring, tiny algae bloom, and then tiny animals called zooplankton eat them, sometimes so well that the water turns very clear for a few weeks.

Scientists call this the clearwater phase. Later in summer, the algae recover as the water warms and nutrients build, and the lake becomes greener. The clear spell shows how living things control each other.
