Book 30, Question 38

What is a rip current at a lake beach?

A rip current is a narrow stream of water that flows away from the shore and can pull swimmers out.

Even on lakes, waves push water onto the beach, and it has to flow back somewhere, often in a channel. If caught in one, stay calm, float, and swim parallel to the shore until out of the current, then go in. Swim where a lifeguard is on duty.
