Book 30, Question 35

Why does a lake sometimes seem to steam on a cold morning?

When very cold air passes over warmer water, the water evaporates quickly.

The vapor cools and turns into tiny droplets right above the surface, making wispy fog that looks like smoke or steam. It happens on frosty fall and winter mornings. The thin columns can swirl and rise. The lake is not boiling; it is just warmer than the air.
