Book 30, Question 19
How long does water stay in a lake?
Scientists call this the residence time.
Lake Superior's water may stay about 190 years before it flows out. Lake Ontario's takes about six years, and Lake Erie's only about two and a half. In a small pond, the water might be replaced in a few weeks. A lake with long residence time cleans itself slowly, so it is more sensitive to pollution.
