Book 30, Question 8
How can a landslide make a lake?
If a big slide of rock and soil falls into a river valley, it can pile up and block the water like a natural dam.
The river backs up behind it and spreads into a new lake. Lake Sarez in Tajikistan formed this way after an earthquake in 1911. Landslide lakes can be short-lived or last for centuries, depending on how strong the blockage is.
