Book 29, Question 68
What are the Three Sisters in gardening?
Indigenous peoples in North America, including the Haudenosaunee, grew corn, beans, and squash together for hundreds of years.
Corn grows tall and gives beans a pole to climb. Beans add nutrients to soil with the help of tiny bacteria. Squash leaves spread across the ground, shading out weeds and keeping the soil damp. The three plants help each other, and together they make a healthy meal.
