Book 28, Question 93

How do gymnasts keep their balance on a narrow beam?

A balance beam is only four inches wide and four feet off the ground.

To stay on it, gymnasts keep their center of gravity, the balance point of the body, right above the beam. If they start to tip, they move their arms or hips the other way to bring it back. Bending the knees lowers the balance point, and looking at the end of the beam helps keep steady.
