Book 28, Question 56

How does a pole vaulter use a bending pole to fly?

A pole vaulter sprints down the runway and plants the end of a flexible pole in a box.

The pole bends and stores energy like a spring. Then it straightens and flings the vaulter upward. The vaulter swings the body and turns over the bar. Top athletes clear heights over six meters, or about 20 feet, as high as a two-story house.
