Book 28, Question 45
Why is the grass on a golf green cut so short?
Greens are mowed very short, often under a quarter of an inch, and rolled so they are smooth and firm.
Long grass would slow down and bend the ball's path. The shorter and smoother the green, the faster and straighter the ball rolls. Greenskeepers measure the speed with a tool and adjust mowing to keep it fair.
