Book 27, Question 139
How did a scientist use crystals to see the shape of medicines?
Dorothy Hodgkin was a British scientist who used X-rays to study crystals of important molecules.
Between the 1940s and 1960s, she worked out the structures of penicillin, vitamin B12, and insulin by studying their crystals. Knowing the shapes helped doctors and chemists understand how they work. She won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1964.
