Book 27, Question 23

What is the smallest repeating piece of a crystal?

The smallest repeating block is called a unit cell.

Imagine a LEGO brick that can be stacked up, down, and sideways to build the whole crystal. Every unit cell has the same atoms in the same places. Different minerals have different unit cells. Scientists use the shape and size of the unit cell to describe a crystal's structure and compare it with others.
