Book 26, Question 103

What is a patent, and why do inventors get one?

A patent is a legal document that says a new invention belongs to its inventor.

Others cannot make or sell it without permission for about twenty years. In return, the inventor explains in detail how the invention works. This lets inventors earn money from their work and lets everyone learn from the ideas. In Canada, a government office reviews patent applications.
