Book 26, Question 31
How can bumps on a whale's flipper improve wind turbines?
Humpback whales have bumps called tubercles along the front edge of their flippers.
They look like they would slow the whale down, but they help water flow smoothly so that the flipper keeps working even at steep angles. Engineers added similar bumps to fan and turbine blades. This helps them work better, especially in light or gusty wind.
