Book 25, Question 126
What did the very first cities look like?
Villages grew into towns with houses packed close together.
About 10,000 years ago, people began farming and could grow more food than they needed. One early town, Çatalhöyük in present-day Turkey, had homes entered from the roof. About 5,000 years ago, Uruk in Mesopotamia had tens of thousands of people, markets, and one of the first kinds of writing, used to keep records.
