Book 25, Question 27
Why do crossing guards hold up a big STOP sign?
Crossing guards help children and other walkers cross busy streets near schools.
A guard steps into the road only when it is safe and holds up a big STOP sign so drivers can see the signal from far away. Drivers must stay stopped until the guard and everyone crossing have left the road. Guards wear bright vests so they can be seen in any weather.
