Book 25, Question 9

Why do skyscrapers have metal rods on top?

Tall buildings are likely to be hit by lightning.

A metal rod at the top, called a lightning rod, gives lightning a safe path. Thick cables connect it to the ground, so the electricity flows around the building and into the earth. Benjamin Franklin invented the lightning rod in the 1700s. The Empire State Building is struck about twenty times a year.
