Why must crews call before they dig?
Underground, there are pipes for water and gas, electric cables, and phone and internet lines, and hitting one by mistake can be dangerous. Before digging, workers call a free service. Locators mark the lines with colored paint and flags: red for electric, yellow for gas, blue for water, and orange for communications. Everyone then knows where to avoid digging.
