Book 24, Question 100
How do pumps keep underground spaces dry?
Water seeps through the rock and soil into mines and tunnels. If it was not removed, the spaces would flood. Workers dig small basins called sumps at low points, where the water collects, and powerful pumps send it up pipes to the surface. Builders also seal cracks and sometimes pump water out from the ground around a construction site before digging.
