Book 24, Question 89
Why do open-pit mines look like giant steps?
In an open-pit mine, workers dig down in wide steps, called benches. This shape keeps the walls from collapsing and gives trucks a spiral road to drive up and down. As the pit gets deeper, the steps get smaller, making a shape like an upside-down cone. The biggest pits are miles wide and can be seen from space.
