Book 24, Question 55

Why do roots grow around rocks instead of through them?

A root tip is soft and cannot push through solid stone. When it touches a rock, it feels the pressure and bends away, growing along the easiest path toward soil that has water and air. Over many years, roots can still crack rocks by growing into small cracks and widening them as they thicken. Plants can shape the stones around them.
