What would you find if you dug a hole straight down?
As you dig, you would pass through layers. First comes a thin top layer of dark, crumbly topsoil full of roots and tiny creatures. Under it is subsoil, which is lighter in color and has more clay and stones. Below that is broken rock, and then solid bedrock.
