Why Do Some Mountains Have Flat Tops?

Some mountains have flat tops because a hard layer of rock protects the softer rock below it! As rain and wind wear away the land around it, the hard cap stays in place. That leaves a flat-topped mountain, called a mesa or a tabletop.
