What Is Humus, and Why Is the Layer of Good Soil So Thin in a Rainforest?

Humus is dark, crumbly material made from rotted plants and animals. It stores nutrients and water for plant roots. In the rainforest, little humus builds up, so the rich soil layer is often just a few inches deep.
