Book 12, Question 128
Why Do Building Codes Matter in Lava Zones?
Building codes matter in lava zones because good design can reduce harm, even though it cannot stop a volcano. Codes are rules about where and how to build. Engineers study past eruptions to write them.
More fun facts
- The Island of Hawaii is divided into nine lava flow hazard zones.
- Zone 1 is the most hazardous; higher numbers mean less hazard.
- Zone 2 is next to and downhill from active rift zones.
- Zone 2 is a bit safer because lava from Zone 1 takes time to reach it.
- The zones show relative danger, so Zone 1 is not exactly twice as risky as Zone 2.
- No place on Maui has lava hazards as high as Zones 1, 2 or 3 on the Island of Hawaii.
