Book 12, Question 26
Why Does Earth Have Thousands of Tiny Earthquakes Every Day That We Never Feel?
Earth is shaking all the time, but most of it is far too small to feel! Instruments detect around half a million small earthquakes every year. That is more than a thousand every day.
More fun facts
- Scientists estimate that several million earthquakes happen on Earth each year.
- Many go unnoticed because they are very small or happen in faraway places.
- Scientists locate about 20,000 earthquakes around the world each year, roughly 55 a day.
- Each year, scientists expect about 16 major earthquakes of magnitude 7 or more.
- In recent decades, 2010 had the most major earthquakes, with 23.
- Earthquake lists grow longer now because there are more instruments, not because there are more earthquakes.
- Short rises or dips in the number of earthquakes are normal and do not mean a big one is coming.
