Why Does Pahoehoe Lava Look Ropy?
Pahoehoe is a Hawaiian word for smooth, ropy lava. Its surface cools into a thin skin that wrinkles into twisted ropes while the lava underneath keeps moving. Real lava is dangerously hot, so people only watch it from far away.
